Answer 33

Three possible hands are given for South, but only one is consistent with their bids. Which one? What would the others hands have bid differently? Neither side is vulnerable.

Hand c)
♠ 4 3 2

K J 10 5

Answer:
  • c) is correct.
  • Your 2 bid (not playing inverted raises) shows four clubs (you’d never support with three, as you’d always have a four-card suit to bid at the one-level) and about 5-9 points (you’d often upgrade a five point hand given the fit). Partner’s 2 is a natural bid – 4-5 - looking for higher places.
  • Hand (a) is bottom of the range – just return to 3 to deny much interest in the goings-on.
  •  Hand (b) is towards the upper range - 2is the best bid, unlikely to be four cards for the lack of a 1 response to 1, so showing three good cards in case partner was looking for a spade stopper for 3NT.
  • That leaves Hand (c), which has truly sky-rocketed in value facing 4-5♣  ♠Axx  AQxx x  ♣ AQxxx and you will make 6
