Three possible hands are given for South, but only one is consistent with their three bids. Which one? What would the others hands have bid differently? Neither side is vulnerable.

Answer:
  • (a) is correct.
  • The back-to-responder’s-suit reply to the Fourth Suit Forcing convention often shows a doubleton in a 5422 shape. Note that 2on the honour-doubleton is a better reply than 2NT with just Ace-small. If you belong in notrumps, there’s plenty of time to get there.
  • Hand (b) should jump to 3 over 2 - jumping to show 16+ points.
  • And Hand (c) is a non-starter, as you should open 1 and plan to rebid notrumps over a new suit response to show your balanced hand.
